Chinese Coins with Spirals Quilt

Wasting no time, I spiral quilted this Chinese Coins baby quilt. It one went more smoothly due to for repeated {recent} practice.

Narrow Chinese Coins are sashed with soft tints of yellow and orange solids. A narrow black inner border and a wide yellow and white stripe frame the quilt. Three spirals of magenta shot cotton are appliqued on the surface.

The quilting enhances the appliqué spirals although it required a few extra pins to keep the fabric flat. Even though I tried, those appliqués stretched the background fabric a bit although those improved with practice, too.

This photo highlights the spiral quilting in the center and part of one of the appliqued spirals.

The back shows off the quilting better. Why is that? It also shows the SID on the inner border.

Four orange prints form the back of the quilt and the spiral quilting shows up beautifully here.

Any wiggling of narrow borders is extremely noticeable so I always SID those first in a color that matches the border. You can't see it on the front...

The border and the various orange prints used to bind the quilt are shown.

but it's visible on the back.

The stitch-in-the-ditch around the inner border and the spiral quilting show clearly on the back of the quilt.

Can you believe this is the fourteenth Coins quilt I've made in this series? I can't.

Another fun quilt! The spiral looks so good. It bet all those wiggles would disappear once the quilt is washed. Good job on number fourteen!

The appliques add such interest to the design!

I knew you had made a good few but fourteen! I like how your spiral quilting and applique give what is fundamentally a strippy, rectangle-based quilt a very curvy feel, quite different from how it seemed before. I also like the SID border showing up on the back, like a frame around the spiral. It's a detail I'd be tempted to do deliberately, even if there weren't a practical reason.

Wowie! the quilting does show up more on the back, and it looks great. I like the spirals a lot, the repeating curves but overlapping with quilting.

I have just gone through and re-formatted several of the fabric pulls for future projects - instead of the original complex ideas, I will be making a series of coins quilts. There's just something about them that makes me happy (and the making itself is far more fun).

Great machine quilting! Spirals with spiral quilting, good choice. And the colors say summer to me, beautiful.

It's a stunner Ann! The applique was definitely the way to go and the circular quilting emphasis the spirals beautifully.

Thank you, Pamela. I hope it will be well-used and well-loved.

You are so funny, Julie.

Yes, they are much less obvious now the quilt is washed. Thanks, Patty.

I'm no expert at applique but it's fun to add it.

Ooh love that spiral. In fact, I am jealous of it. I guess I must practice some more.

It is an extremely simple design so I'm enjoying adding different things to see what it can become. Good point about the SID border. It does look so interesting on the back. It's a bit like a diamond in a square although, in this case, it's a spiral in a square.

Thanks, LeeAnna. It was fun to play with spiral applique and quilting.

Thank you, Sue.

They certainly are fun and easy which makes them great baby quilts IMO. Plus, I like any way that helps me use up scraps. I look forward to seeing your creations. Enjoy.

Thanks, Janie. Seeing how the same little coins change with the different sashing colors interests me.

Thanks, Maureen. I hadn't planned to spiral quilt until I saw how the previous quilt worked out. Now I know I must try it again. These simple quilting designs are more in my wheelhouse.

You are too kind, Preeti. It's pretty easy as long as you put something else in the center. I.e., don't make the beginning of the spiral too small for a walking foot to circle.
