Selvedge String Quilt Resewn

The Selvedge String quilt is back together. Although most people won't notice any difference, I like it better.

Here's what it looked like the first time. The lighting is better in this photo but the long selvedge from side to side bothered me. That's what I removed.

Because I added fillers, there are still places where they point in opposite directions when they meet, but it no longer feels like opening a book.

    Nuances are important. Your Selvedge String quilt is terrific. It is making my old grey cells kick into gear with ideas!

    Yes, I prefer that too, and it is interesting to consider why. Once I saw that line, it became the only thing I could see, and I stopped looking at the rest of the quilt. Now the design has a lot more "flow." Looking good!

      Thanks, Monica. You're right. That line is subtle but really bothered me once I noticed it. I now believe it's because it was the only one that went the entire width of the quilt. That made it a sashing and one single sashing looks weird.

    amazing the effect that changing a little detail can make. This is so graphic, the whole is more than a sum of parts. The whole is a statement. LeeAnna

    I can see the improvement, even though the change is a small one - everything flows better now, so worth the effort to unpick. I like the way the filler strips work in this too.

    The reworked version is very cool! I like your setting--from a distance the rectangles look like one piece of fabric. Well done!

    Good call Ann! Your eye doesn't get 'stuck' at the crossing anymore and I really like the way that enables the diagonal rhythm to come into play. Borders next? Oh can't wait to see what you do with those!

      Thanks, Stephie. That's what happened. The former strip acted like a dam, stopping all movement. This is better.

    You've definitely made the quilt even better now Ann! My eyes travel all around the quilt with nothing to stop the easy movement. Really great work! The fillers and the squares add excitement and anchor all the selvage strips beautifully!
