AHIQ Link Up March 2016

Lately I've been quilting tops. Most are scrap quilts, although I'm getting ready to quilt the sawtooth improv. I use dry erase markers on a 30"x30" piece of vinyl to preview quilting designs. To keep any residue off the quilts, make sure the same side is always on top. The easiest way is to put painters tape around the edge of one side so you always know which side is up.

Trying out quilting designs on an overlay vinyl

I thought about quilting the zigzags and echoing them on the muslin. (That's my plan on the right.) Tami and ML came up with the better plan on the left.  We all agreed I should stitch in the ditch around the zigzags. So there will be many threads to bury and it will take a while.

Tami pieced a fabulous top based on the Rhythmic Grid score. Take a look. These are her favorite colors - although the entire group would be willing to take this one home!

Enjoy the day, Ann

I really like your sawtooth quilt. It will be fabulous no matter how you decide to quilt it. Tami's quilt is very cool too! I can see why everyone would love to take it home!

Thanks for sharing the vinyl overlay trick! I am trying various methods of previewing quilting lines as I am a relative newbee when it comes to the quilting part.

Thanks, Patty. I'm glad you like it. It is different from anything I've ever made but I'm so pleased with it. Tami's colors and layout are fabulously attractive, too.

This feels like such a different colour palette for you Ann and I'm really curious to see how it finishes up. I love the way it's looking so far. I think the 'grid' quilting design will work really well - don't envy all the thread burying though, I think I'd do it as I went along so it didn't feel like such a laborious task at the end. Maybe it's something you enjoy though, some of us have our weird love of binding after all!!!

You're welcome, Kat. A friend showed me this trick. Being able to see many different ideas and densities is really helpful. Originally I had a very large piece of vinyl but found it too big to use easily so I split it with my study group.

It is, Stephie. And I'd forgotten how differently muslin drapes and feels. You are so right about thread burying. If I leave the task till the end it is painful to get them all done. Although it slows me down, I usually bury them at the sewing table as the occur. Glad we agree!

The plan you have in mind now will really showcase the sawtooth blocks beautifully Ann! I like your vinyl trick - very clever!
I hope to be able to join in with AHIQ again in June, but in the meantime it is so fun to see what others are doing! Your friend Tami's quilt is amazing too!

This is one of my favorite quilts of yours. Can't wait to see it with the texture from quilting!

The vinyl overlay is a great idea! I like your quilting plan. It will really work with this quilt and show off those interesting sawtooth blocks. Have fun with this gorgeous top!

I live in the firm belief that nothing on this earth can slow you down Ann! I guess if you left all the thread burying until the end you'd risk them all getting tangled and knotted together too - that would certainly induce some swearing this side of the pond!

This is one of my favourites too - I love the visual reference to African textiles and the colour palette. Your quilting plan should work really well and emphasise the sawtooth blocks.

A friend showed me the vinyl trick. It works so well. I can put the vinyl on the wall as a guide while quilting, too. I know you've been busy with your upcoming book and new grandchild. So much fun! I've been looking forward to the book for a while. There are several applique projects I'd like to try but hand sewing bothers my wrist after a while. Hopefully your method will help with that. Plus, the cover looks so darn cute. Love those teardrop campers.

How kind of you, Audrey. I'm on the home stretch but there are so many little, fiddly steps to finishing. This will be hard to give away. I'm contemplating making a substitute and keeping this one.

It certainly is helpful for me, Mary. Let me know how you like it.

Thanks, Kaja. This quilt came out so well. I quite like it, too. Sometimes it's fun to work with a completely different palette.

Thanks for the vinyl trick! I never ever know how to quilt anything so it would be a nice way to try different options.

A friend showed me and it's been a great help. Like you, I want to try out different ideas before I start quilting. I hope you find it useful as well.
