Polka Dot quilt with improv string border |
I decided to leave one border undotted... just to be different.
What about you? What did you do this past month?
Enjoy the day, Ann

I love those circles. Did you use a Drunkard's path ruler or make your own?
I really like how this has turned out a lot. Your backgrounds and the brighter colours sit very comfortably together and are probably more to my taste than a quilt made with the clear brights would have been.
This is a stunning quilt!
Your Freddy Dot quilt is so fun! I had a busy month - finished a quilt, started another for my sister, made equipment covers for my brother, made a curtain for a customer of another one of my brothers, knitted, and cleaned my garage. There is always something to do!
It turned out smashing Ann! The fabrics work together so well!
No improv again for me this month. But, my secret purple guild challenge quilt is improv-ish, so you'll see that for sure next month! I'd better get cracking...
Love your Dot Com flimsy! I think the three white dots are just right. And I think you've inspired me to put a piano key border on one of mine too.
Too fun! Did you post how you made the circles? I'll have to look through some of your older posts to see.

This is a wonderful piece though. It's enough all by itself, right?:)
I especially like the use of dots in the piano key borders (AND that you kept one border different than the other three). I also like the way the darker border plays with the darker dots in the light backgrounds. Well done!!!
I love this quilt, to be honest I prefer your version to the pattern. It's a great use of colour, especially the red, bright blue and green in the circles with the dark centres. I like the way you took the circles into the borders too, inspired.
Smiles
Kate
This is a fun quilt! I love pretty much anything with dots though! I love that you took the dots out into the 3 of the borders.
Question: can anyone join in on the ad hoc improv quilt linkup? I'd love to join in, if possible.
We're delighted to have anyone with improvisational and/ or utility quilt work join in. Add your link and read what some others have written, too. This is becoming a great linkup for sharing.
It's a ruler forma class I took years ago. I'm trying to get a photo of the original quilt.
It's funny how our personal color choices come through, isn't it? I like mine but am still analyzing the differences in Freddy's style and mine. I think we can all learn from others but it takes a lot of thought.
Thanks, Sandra.
Wow, you had a busy month. Lots of family for me, too. Still going on.
I made that quilt/took the workshop with Freddy maybe about 8 years ago. The trouble is, I can't figure out how I want to quilt it, so it is still sitting as a flimsy!! :-) I should let go and just send it out to be quilted!! :-) Yours looks great! I love the colors you used. Hugs, H
Thanks you, Lara. I've been using the workshops to make gift quilts. This one turned out well plus I had the fun of trying to tweak my palette.
It will be good to see your challenge quilt next month. Yes, get cracking! :-)
I haven't used piano key border in years. It is easy and effective. Be sure to show us yours.
Thanks, Nancy. I did post some info previously. In fact, I think most of this month has been about the polka dot quilt. Let me know if you need more information.
I'm trying to finish more one at a time rather than stacking them up. But then the machine broke. You're right, though. This has been a fun project. Now to get it quilted.
Thanks for the encouragement, Julie. They got added when I was deciding if the quilt needed anything else. It was an experiment that worked well. I like having one undotted border, too. A bit unexpected, perhaps.
Thanks, Kate. I like red (so does Freddy) so almost half my circles are red. I'm pleased about the circles in the border, too. Isn't it a relief when the quilt finishes better than it looked in progress?
I know what you mean, Helen. Someone quilts Freddy's. She told us but I've forgotten the name. However, I took careful note of several of the quilting designs. They all seemed to be FMQ and only moderately heavy. You know, not sparse but not heirloom. Many were happy circle themes. Be sure to post yours as a top and when it's finished. What fun to see more of these.
I'm still catching up after another bout of flu Ann, and I can hardly believe you've finished another top in that time! This one is fantastic and without a shadow of a doubt I'd know it was one of yours. I think the border is fantastic :)
I'm so sorry you have this horrible bug that's been going around. Twice is too much. Yuck. I hope you're much better soon. I'm glad you like this quilt. It was fun to make. I decided most of the workshop quilts would become gifts. It lets me think about colors the recipient would like as well as colors the teacher prefers and how they compare to the ones I use. I feel like I'm learning a lot.
Quite lovely!
It's no good, I keep having to come back and have another look, LOVE it!
A stunning quilt Ann I like it a lot, it would make you think a lot if hung in a waiting room instead of worrying. Cheers Glenda
Hi Ann me again I have just been browsing back through your blog and throughly enjoyed how you built this quilt up, yep it is one stunning quilt and I especially like the way you finished the border very very effective. Again thanks for sharing. Cheers Glenda
Thanks for writing.
How sweet of you, Kate. The border really perked this one up.
Hi, Glenda. I'm glad you looked through previous posts. I always enjoy reading about quilters' process and watching their progress. It's even more fun than the finished quilt - probably because we all enjoy creativity and making things. Thanks for writing.
