My First Chinese Coin Columns

It can be difficult to make a quilt with a certain person in mind while also creating something that maintains your own interest throughout the construction. My niece's style and color palette are much quieter than my own.

Currently I'm pairing fabrics for each column with the idea of adding bits from the scrap bag when the columns are too short. Here's what I have today.

First two columns of Chinese Coins

Despite adding a block of daisies and dots, the blue column is still a bit short so I'm also inserting those darker blue strings. The columns aren't completely sewed yet. {"Just say no," to unsew.} Sets of four or eight coins makes them faster and easier to move around than those little bitty triangles in the Spiderweb border. I'm setting aside a couple of coins to work with inserts.

Short coin stacks let me change
my mind easily during construction

Enjoy the day, Ann

the idea of coin quilts is seemingly unlimited! Amazing what can be done once you start

Looking forward to forward to seeing this quilt evolve!!

Thanks, Ariane.

They have more versatility than first glance assumes. There are other blocks I thought had more variety which are much more limited.

Thanks, Mel. You are as kind as always. It needs to evolve quickly so it can be gifted on time... for once.

I quite like those falling rain drops! They remind me of Japan (I was there in the rainy season, mostly), and rain chimes. If you are happy with it, then your niece will be too. :D

You noticed them! I think she'll like that design, too.

Good start, Ann. I'm still gathering inspiration on my version.

Oh, good. I'm glad you're going to try this.

What a pretty start, Ann. The colors complement each other and adding in the scraps gives them a bit of sparkle. Can't wait to see more of the coin quilt evolve!

You're off to a good start -I'm just about finished cutting my fabrics!

Thanks, Mary. I find this color scheme difficult and hope the scraps help.

Yay! I'm sure yours will be beautiful since your fabrics are always gorgeous.

The dark blue strings break up those sections and looks great!

Thanks, Patty. That column needed a darker shade, didn't it?

I've stalled, so it's interesting to see how you are approaching this. I like the idea of using the scrap bag as a back-up supply, and of working with short stacks to retain flexibility. Thanks!

I keep stalling out on my various projects, too. This one is tough because I keep second guessing what my niece would want.

Off to a good start, I see! I have something in mind for mine but it's going to take me awhile. I might have something ready to show at next AHIQ linky. I'm anxious to see everyone's coins.

You and me both, Cathy. everyone is so inventive I'm sure I'll be blown away.
