Clearing the Scrap Bag

It's too much effort to go through the stash although it desperately needs straightening. Clearing the scrap bag is easier. There are lots of whites, lights, and clear colors that remind me of spring or early summer.

And I figured another way to sort the scraps for a Coin quilt. First I separated them by color then assigned each fabric to one of three groups. Each has the same number of fabrics in each color but they are different fabrics. Does that make sense?

Here's what I have so far. It's only two of the three groups and needs work. Obviously. I pinned the sheets together to get to the length I want but don’t like how they are arranged currently.

Chinese Coins XI in progress

This is the last top I'm making for the very delayed demonstration at my guild. It was rescheduled to next week. I've already given several of these quilts away; I always do. I had to make some more to have variations to show.

Enjoy the day, Ann

I agree about scraps being easier to deal with than re-folding/re-organizing fabric--mine still needs doing!!
Nice beginning to the coin rows..You are inspiring me to make another with my leftover maroons, blues and neutrals...

Using scraps is always better than storing them. Hooray for your rescheduled demo!

I have been just enjoying the heck out of this series, right from day one. You keep finding such interesting ways to play with coins. You've kindled an idea or two in my brain, too, so I suspect someday I'll be following along with coins of my own.

I love seeing your Chinese Coin Quilt series. Another pretty variation. Your guild will love this workshop - wish I could be there but I do live in the UK!

And did you manage to clean out the scrap bag? LOL!

You're on a roll. There are many quilts that I've given away that I wish I had to show for some class or demonstration. It's what we quilters do. Sounds like your system works.

You are so good about working through the scraps. I have a monster pile of them that I need to deal with.:)

You have great scraps and wonderful projects with them!

Turquoise and orange stand out in the mix, spring and early summer, yes.
Lovely.

Like you, I need to work through my stash when I have the strength but at least I'm reducing the scraps momentarily. They have a way of reappearing quickly though. The beautiful fabrics you've used recently would make a delightful scrap quilt. And they are already organized!

I agree. I have a small bag for them yet it still holds an amazing amount. Several quilts worth. I'm excited about the demo, too. So glad it could be rescheduled.

You are so kind, Gayle. I never expected to make so many, especially since several have the same structure. They certainly are an easy way to use up scraps. Plus they can be unexpectedly beautiful. I hope you make one soon.

I'm glad you like them, Linda. I'm excited and scared about this workshop. Shouldn't be because they are mostly friends. I would be amazing if you happened to be in town, too. Sorry.

Hahaha, Nann. Of course not. There's enough for four or more quilts in there. How does that happen? It's not a very large bag.

You are so right, Robin. We can't keep them all. It's hard to decide which ones to keep for demos. I've pretty much given up choosing to just make more. As you said, it works for me.

Sometimes I think I focus more on the scraps than I do on the stash... Like it must get into the scrap bag before I can make something with it. Grr. However, it's easier to be interested in making these scrap quilts now because my kids are the right ages again. Their friends are marrying and having babies. This won't last long but for now is a great motivator.

Haha, Mel. I'll bet you're teaching another fabulous class. Wish I could be there. We'll just have to get together sometime and talk. Thanks for the good wishes.

Thanks, Pamela. I'm glad you like them, too.

Yes, those are your colors, Janie. I see coral, green, and turquoise. They are happy colors, aren't they.

Another beautiful Coins quilt top!

Thanks, Patty. It still has a way to go but I like the colors.

Another beautiful coins quilt. I like how all the fabrics play nicely together, and are lively.

Ann said...

Thanks, Shasta. They are more organized than usual. I think because I'm making this with scraps from only a few previous quilts.

I like the colours a lot and it's helpful to me to learn how you went about organising the groupings - it makes sense to impose a little bit of order to scraps and your way chimes with me on an intuitive level.

Figuring out ways to group Coin columns has been a big task this year. People wanted to hear how I put so many prints together so that was the focus of the class. But secondarily, it's how do you sort the stuff (if you choose to sort at all)? Some of them work better than others. Personally I like mixing colors and values within the columns.
