Half Square Triangles and Scraps

"But wait. There's still more." My quilting sounds like those late night TV commercials!

Although I repurposed the narrow columns from the last attempt at Chinese Coins, the wider columns remain. Those encased columns work better when they are very narrow so the wide ones need a different plan. Taking 6-8" wide columns, I sub-cut them into six-inch squares and got busy combining them with new solids.

Six-inch squares of Chinese Coins

Orange, red, and pink also were cut into squares. Mixing them up made this.

HST scrap block of warm solids and Chinese Coins

I'm very excited about this start, especially because it doesn't look like Chinese Coins!! Amazing. It's a great first day of working on this project. Thanks to Cathy for promoting 20-minute interval sewing. It's helped me slow down and consider multiple possibilities.

Enjoy the day, Ann

I was just getting to some blog reading this morning and read your previous post and was going to ask what you were going to do with the leftover coins but didn't comment before I read this post. Now I know. Oh, I love this. I like that you mixed up warm solids and didn't use all the same one. It has a sort of 3D effect, vintage vibe, wonderfully scrappy. Yes!!

Love it!

I love this approach -- such a great way to use the sewn together strips and come up with some so wonderfully different.

This is a color thrill!
Good vibes, I'll be back for more.

I love the color of HST you have chosen. It gives everything movement and interest. Nice work!

These are gorgeous, Ann! Those reds and variations look vibrant, warm, and inviting. I also love the fact that even the smallest leftover strips can be used on the outer corners of the triangles. I may become a copycat.

Oh yes, very different Chinese Coins, inspired designing!

Ann, that IS the best part about your work and your blog. That there is more. More to see, more to learn, more to be inspired by. I have your blog bookmarked for when I attempt the "Trip Around the world" blocks, the roses on the Chinese coins background and more. I am sure there is more.

This is a lovely start to a new quilt. It is nice to hide those coins. Keeps them from getting stolen! Tricky that you are hiding them in plain sight.

Thanks, Cathy. Really. For the lovely comments and for the 20-minute method. Although I'm not using it every time, it does remind me to slow down and take a new look on a new day. There were so many red solids when I looked in the bin that I had to use them all. It is more dimensional than I ever expected.

Thanks, Pamela.

Thanks, Julie. It's time to try something new for a while. This is making a good transition.

Thanks, Janie. You are so good with color and unique arrangements that it's a great compliment.

Thanks, Robin. There were a few "reds" I left out but I tried to run from pink to red to coral.

Thanks, Nancy. I'm so glad to be making a new red quilt as well as using up some scraps. Doesn't it give us a good feeling to use all our scraps?

Thanks, Maureen. I still think your yellow and green Chinese Coins are the most original.

How very kind of you, Preeti. I'm honored you enjoy what I've written. I like your blog because of the conversations between you and Paul. So fun. Mine reads more like an instruction manual... or a junior high diary. Sigh. I need to take some writing classes... but I'd rather quilt.

Too funny, Shasta. But hiding in plain sight is the best way to hide things. My father used to play "Hide the Quarter" with us kids. That was the point; we always had great fun and hopefully learned to be more observant.

This is great! I have lot of vintage red half triangles that I ended up with in a box of scraps from some in-law relative and now I know what to do with them! The cooler blues and greens look great again the warm reds.

It will be fun to see what you do with your reds, Patty. I'm glad you're inspired.

I like this a lot! The mixed red/coral solids give these blocks a lovely warmth and make something coherent out of all your scraps. I guess it's fun to be working with squares instead of strips for a change, even though I think this still counts as part of your Coins series.

Thanks, Kaja. The interplay of warm solids and cool strips creates unique effects. Plus it's exciting to be working with a new shape.

What a clever effect! The solid triangles enhance the stripes.

Thanks, Nann. Serendipity.
