Medallion Chinese Coins III Quilt Finished

"When I say it's you I like, I'm talking about that... deep part of you that allows you to stand for those things without which humankind cannot survive. Love that conquers hate, peace that rises triumphant over war, and justice that proves more powerful than greed."
~ Fred Rogers ~

While {I'd like to say} quilt designs are rarely reprised or repeated, I've recently completed a second pair of baby/toddler quilts. This pair is even more identical than the previous ones except the sizes vary this time. That makes them a perfect older sibling/new baby gift. Not that there's one on the horizon, but it will come.

Adding appliquéd flowers made these tops into something more special. Remember they were the bottom of the scrap bag. It took both quilts to actually empty the bag that time. The technique is a variation of raw edge appliqué. Check Lara Buccella's book Crafted Appliqué for more information.

To make it more like the other medallion, I quilted Baptist Fans again. Free motion quilting is a good change of pace from all the simple walking foot lines I've been doing. And so relaxing.

When it was time to bind the quilt I found a pile of orange leftovers in the scrap bag and trimmed them to size. Unfortunately they don't look good on this quilt. They are simply too bright. So...

I found a lighter peach remnant in my stash. This shade isn't as bright plus the white design printed on top brings the intensity down further.

Here's a view of the back showing the Fans and the quiet binding.

And here's a view of the binding itself with the outer border and parts of the back showing. Yes. This works much better.

Another wonderful finish. I do like the flowers sprinkled on the quilt.

yes... the flowers lifted it up. I like the quote so much, especially the last line. It's that kind of hope that keeps us going. Our lives are important to us, but we are really just a long line of lives that come and go, and the earth must be protected for the ones to come. It's more important.
your artwork, and handwork, will comfort and surround a child, letting them know they matter.

Great finish, Ann, the applique flowers are beautiful and your binding is perfect.
And 'when I say it's you I like....' that kind of light will always shine.

A lovely coin quilt version. I really like the added floral details!

Congrats on the finish! It's always nice to have some quilts on hand and ready for gifting when the occasion arises. One of these days I'm going to have to try some fmq fans. I love hand quilting them but the thought of trying them on the DSM makes me sooooo nervous! And I love the flower sprinkles. I'm going to have to try that too.

I was already in love with this quilt, as soon as my eyes fell on it. And then I saw the applique flowers. Ooh, how enchanted am I?

This was one of my favorites when you completed the first one! There's something about the appliqued flowers that just adds an extra layer of sweetness to this quilt.:)

Oh, I like this medallion idea for Chinese coins! You've really found some interesting settings for that block. Wish I could stick with ONE thing for longer than two minutes. I'll have to work on that. (Too.)
Love the quilt!

Another beautiful finish Ann - I love this one!! So different from the usual Chinese Coin quilts we see, you must be thrilled with your so very different take on the settings.

Thanks, Julie Rose. The flowers turned out so well I'm inspired to applique more. Even this simple bit adds depth to a quilt.

The quote is a fabulous reminder to me. Personal accountability.

Thanks, Patty. They were fun and surprisingly easy.

Which Indian chief said we borrow the earth from our grandchildren? I can't remember and the internet is no help.
"We are a long line of lives." So true. Thanks, LeeAnn.

Thanks, Janie. It turned out almost as well as your beauties.

They do add something to the quilt. I need to applique more often. Thanks, Linda.

I'm a mini-Cathy. Nowhere near as prolific as you. It is good to have a stack ready for any occasion. The fans are pretty easy if you keep them under the size of your machine throat so you have room to maneuver each arc. I practiced on paper first. They aren't as good as hand sewn ones but they sure are faster for me.

How kind of you, Preeti. Audrey's applique inspired me to try something myself. It's amazing what polish they add to the quilt. Thanks.

Such a relief to have a small stack ready to go. Finishes are great.

They do, don't they? Funny how such small bits raise the level of the entire quilt. Thanks.

They do, don't they? I was inspired by all your applique, Audrey. It makes your quilts so exciting, raises them to a higher level. So much more interest. Thanks for sharing generously with us all.

I can't believe how many iterations of Chinese Coins I've made. Moratorium needed although they may be my go-to scrap quilt for years.
I have problems sticking with one all the way through, too. Sigh.

Thanks, Maureen. My favorite part is that these two quilts came from the "dregs" of the scrap bag. There's always something interesting in it. The added applique really improved them. Plus I've been wanting to make a medallion for a while. This is very simple but fits that bill, too.

This is one of my favourites too and at some point I am going to copy your idea of using Coins in this way. I agree that your applique brings a lot of extra movement and joy to this quilt. Seeing you use it here somehow makes me understand better why Audrey turns to it so consistently.

Medallion quilts always draw me. I think it's because they always looked "framed."
You and I both admire Audrey's applique. A tiny bit here made a huge difference. I must use embellishments more often. They improve the quilt so much. Like stamping or thicker thread. I think about them but get lazy or scared. Must try harder in future.
