Chinese Coins VII: Strewing Roses Top

Hand-turning the leaves took a while but machine applique went much faster.

Chinese Coins VIII: Strewing Roses quilt top

I thought turning the blanket stitch around would imitate the hatching on the rose leaves. It wasn't that successful. The stitch pulls the background fabric up a bit. Temporary paper backing would have helped except I forgot about it till now. A darker green thread would have better shown the jagged edges.

Some thorns were added in a solid lighter green fabric. {A friend pointed out the thorns are lighter than the rose stem.} However, unless the thorn sits on white or light blue, it really doesn't show. We always hear "value is more important than color" and here is the proof. The thorns and the background are equal value.

Happy Labor Day weekend. I hope you, your family and friends enjoy time together.

Enjoy the day, Ann

Your quilt top is gorgeous - and I like the reticent thorns.

I love how this is turning out--those thorns are so perfect...and the placement of the roses is just right. Beautiful work on this Ann hugs, Julierose

Love the colors and the rose placements...this is going to be beautiful! This is the first time I've seen thorns on roses on any quilt. What a unique idea and so fun. They came out well..

I can't find the thorns... funny in life I find them too easily lol
you can always shade around them with prismacolor pencils in dark purple. Light hand to see how they look. I've done it many times and it looks quite natural

I like that the thorns are kind of hidden. Just like life, we have to be alert to the danger that my pop up unexpectedly. The quilt turned out so pretty ~ sigh.

The thorns are fun addition. I like them how they are...a little surprise hidden there until you look closely. Gosh, your quilt just keeps getting better and better.

Life is full of hidden thorns...
I love this quilt so much - it looks like trellised roses against the sky. The colors just sing!

Thanks, Karen.

Thanks, Julie. Reticent thorns = clever name.

The leaves really sparked life into this quilt although I love the roses themselves. Thanks, Julierose.

I like these reds against sky blues. Adding thorns was a last minute idea and I did like adding them. Thanks for writing, Jann.

Yes, I'm always grabbing thorns on rose stems and lime branches. You'd think I'd be wary after all these years.
I LOVE the idea of shading with prismacolors. I looked at your blog trying to find some examples. Send me links to specific posts showing this if you can. I rarely work with pen and ink; it's time I learned. Are they permanent? Thanks so much for the suggestions, LeeAnna.

Such an appropriate analogy, Robing. Thanks. I'm glad you like this quilt, too.

You are so kind, Cathy. I had no idea how this would turn out; each step took on its own life. You and Robin made a great point (pun intended) about thorns emulating hidden surprises.

I like how these rich reds look against sky blue. Thanks, Julie.

I like the way the roses are backlit against the sky, too, Gayle. And good point about the thorns.

I love this! Seeing how beautiful your quilt is makes me want to try something like this. Some day... Very well done!

I had not noticed the thorns, but they are perfect for a close look at the quilt. I love when the quilt offers something from a distance and something for a close-up and personal look. It just makes the quilt more interesting. Just like everyone else seems to think, I love the colors and the concept.

Thanks, Pamela. It truly was improvisational as I have stopped at each step to determine what should come next. Lots of fun so don’t wait as long as I have to start.

You’re so right, Mary. Layers of detail make quilts and other art work much more interesting than catching everything in one glance. Thanks.

I’ve been trimming Wild rose bushes and can attest to the fact that thorns aren’t necessarily obvious! It’s beautiful, Ann!

We didn't have many wild roses but the blackberries had some wicked thorns. Thanks for writing, Karen.

This is such a fantastic quilt. Love the details and the layers! It feels very authentic. The fact that the thorns don't immediately show up just makes a person smile when they discover them. It's a great touch.:)

You're so kind, Audrey. I've been inspired by all your applique to try my hand. This is the first one that has completely changed the look of the quilt. I'll be doing more in future. Thanks!
